Honest Work

Original recording part of Erudite project named Experiences of the Pupil. Tape marked ‘Maria Bridger’.

The funniest thing about how much everything changed is how it also didn’t change at all. Yeah, the world ended but once you finish picking up the pieces, someone still has to do the dishes. Someone has to sweep the floor and do the laundry, bathe the children and clean the toilet. All these fantastical, terrible things have happened but the day to day remains the same. Oh, some of it is easier now. Magic definitely helps with things but it doesn’t stop it needing to be done. Besides, some things are just done better by hand. You COULD wave your hands and try to use magic to clean the floor but unless you have a clear image in your head of exactly what counts as dirt, you could just as easily find the tiles disintegrated as disinfected. So at the end of the day, it’s better to just get a mop. I’m not complaining mind. I like the work. I like how normal it feels and it’s not all cleaning, I also babysit the little ones and cook. That’s another thing magic hasn’t mastered. You ever had magically made food? It’s awful! All you need is a good pair of hands with the right ingredients and tools, it’ll always be better. No, it’s not the big fancy magic projects that you lot get to do. It’s nothing special, it’s nothing profound, it’s not going to change the world. But it’s what keeps you going, it’s what keeps us all going. I’m perfectly happy where I am. So, if you want to make my life easier, stop trying to re-invent the broom or make the perfect Onion Soup spell. Just give me what I ask for without thinking that you know better than me, alright? We’ll carry on just fine.
